Trezor.io/Start® — Start Your Device Securely

Official Trezor® setup guide: unbox, initialize, secure recovery, and transact safely.

Welcome to Trezor.io/Start®. This page is your step-by-step landing guide for beginning with a Trezor® hardware wallet. Hardware wallets keep private keys isolated inside secure hardware so your crypto can’t be taken by remote malware. The setup process is simple but critical: correct initialization, careful recovery seed handling, firmware updates, and transaction verification on the device form a chain of protections. Read each step, act deliberately, and store recovery information offline.

Overview — what you’ll do

1
Inspect packaging

Verify seals and authenticity markers. If anything looks tampered with, contact official support before proceeding.

2
Initialize device

Power on and follow on-device prompts to create a new wallet or restore an existing one.

3
Create PIN

Choose a PIN required to unlock and authorize transactions on the device. Keep it secret.

4
Record recovery seed

Write recovery words down offline in order. The seed is the only guaranteed way to recover funds if the device is lost.

Step-by-step setup

1
Unbox & inspect.

Open the package and check factory seals, warranty stickers and expected contents. Do not proceed if packaging shows tampering.

2
Pick a secure environment.

Use a private, trusted computer or mobile device. Avoid public Wi-Fi, shared laptops, or unknown USB hubs when initializing.

3
Initialize on-device.

Follow the device prompts — select \"Create new wallet\" or \"Recover wallet\". Confirm every prompt on the device’s screen rather than only on your computer.

4
Set a PIN.

Enter a PIN that balances memorability and strength. Never store the PIN with your recovery seed and never share it.

5
Write down the recovery seed.

Carefully copy each word in order onto the supplied recovery card or another durable offline medium. Treat the seed as the master key to your funds — keep it offline and secure.

6
Consider an optional passphrase.

A passphrase (a 25th secret) adds an extra layer of protection by creating a hidden wallet. Only use this if you understand the responsibility; losing the passphrase and seed means permanent loss.

7
Update firmware & apps.

Before moving funds, apply official firmware updates and install companion apps from verified sources. Updates fix bugs and strengthen security.

8
Verify transaction details on-device.

When sending funds, always confirm recipient addresses and amounts on the Trezor® screen. This prevents malware from altering copied addresses.

9
Start with a test transfer.

Send a small amount first to confirm everything works. After successful verification, you can transact larger amounts with confidence.

Practical security checklist

  • Never share your recovery seed, PIN, or passphrase with anyone — official support will never ask for them.
  • Store recovery words offline in secure locations (consider multiple copies in different secure sites).
  • Only download firmware and companion software from official Trezor® channels and verified links.
  • Keep companion devices updated and scanned for malware before connecting your Trezor®.
  • Confirm every transaction on the Trezor® screen before approving.
